Chairman’s Message

Mayibuye Africa!

It is a known fact that Africa’s people remain among some of the poorest in the world even though the continent is blessed with rich and diverse renewable and non-renewable natural resources. Africa has the largest world reserves in Platinum, Chromium and Gold and hosts seven of the world’s ten fastest growing economies in the world. The past decade has seen Africa’s growth in provision of agriculture, energy, education and infrastructure. We at Ntonga hail in Africa’s emergence and her spirit.We relish in her resilience, her character, her resolution and we join in her exertion to improve the quality of life for her people through measures revolving around sustainable development.

Ntonga Group Holdings was established as a multi-sector organisation, that places great emphasis on Africa as its point of reference in its endeavor to pursue high- level engagements and related business processes. At the centre of our strategic engagements is sustainable development. The concept of sustainable development has taken on many definitions over the years but one that proves adequate to us at Ntonga, defines sustainable development as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. This assertion has major implications on the various roles different stakeholders together with African communities need to play in accomplishing the vision of development on the continent that extends beyond short-term selfish outcomes based on capital instead of sustainability.

Our goal as an organisation is to define and refine strategies that support various African governments, organisations, corporations and civil society, in establishing projects, programmes, and processes, through the facilitation of advancements in infrastructure development, education and skills development. Ultimately, our vision is to achieve sustainable institutional development with the common goal of significantly improving basic and bulk infrastructure, community development and education in creating self-sustainable communities on the continent and by extension the world.

At the helm of Ntonga’s development objectives is a dedicated team of visionaries, leaders, professionals and innovators who, on a daily basis strive to tailor-make unique solutions in endeavors to improve circumstances for corporates and governments alike for purposes of increasing access to infrastructure; energy; as well as education and training for sustainable development.

Ntonga takes on an inclusive investment model and development approach in fulfilling a vision dedicated to the creation of a profitable enterprise through development initiatives. Amongst other imperatives, our approach is supported by the fact that: –

  • Africa will be the leader of population growth in the next S0 years and will need to host and support mega-cities;
  • Africa has more than half of the world’s fertile yet unused cropland and will need to support large scale commercial farming and agro-processing facilities;
  • Africa’s inadequate rail network and high transport costs provides an opportunity to develop cost effective and efficient transport networks for freight and passenger usage;
  • Africa has a huge untapped energy reserve including hydropower, geothermal energy, solar and wind energy.Africa’s power demand will increase 93% by 203S, which will cause greater development and need to build power plants; and
  • Africa is now the fastest growing and second largest mobile phone market in the world, with subscriptions projected to I Billion users by 20I6, this will require innovative efforts in e-business, e-payments, e-learning, e-health and e-government.

These opportunities signify Africa’s move from a comparative to a competitive stakeholder on the world’s economic stage. Ntonga’s initiatives support this paradigm shift. These include the development of the world’s first Agribusiness Youth City in Senegal; a new city development in Northern KwaZulu Natal in South Africa; a West African Energy Bank pioneered out of the Republic of Guinea; a multi-faceted military heritage development (Artellerie de la Cote) in Senegal; as well as a West African regional railway link.

Nationally, one of Ntonga’s greatest innovations by way of development is the Great North Development Forum (GNDF). Located in the northern region of the KwaZulu Natal Province, the Great North boasts the second largest economic region in the province, despite it being among the poorest regions in South Africa. The GNDF

– one of the developmental projects of Ntonga Group Holdings – seeks to consolidate business development opportunities in KwaZulu Natal Province by transforming it into a ‘business, trade, investment and economic hub’ through the establishment of a framework for two levels of communication, engagement and partnership ‘clusters’ within the economic region, including:

  • Strategic regional and global business and trade partnerships between South African and other investors from different parts of the world; and
  • Partnerships between private sector organizations; Local and District Municipalities in South Africa; State Agencies; State Departments;Traditional Local Councils, and Civil Organizations Communities.

In order to achieve sustainability at home and on the continent, the traditional definition of wealth must be expanded to include and incorporate development. Ntonga Group Holdings in its scope and project specific initiatives endeavors to achieve the goal of regional and continental sustainable development in Africa.

We remain enthusiastic about our involvement on the African continent and inspired by Africa’s economic

emergence.
